Singles' Day always falls on November 11 because the date 11/11 represents four ones, or four singles, standing together. The name literally translates as "single sticks holiday."

That's up an astonishing 85.6% year over year with the jump likely owing to Singles' Day being held over four days in last year for the first time. Additionally, Singles' Day 2020 had more than 250,000 brands participating, including 31,000 internationl companies.

United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom, the term "Black Friday" originated from the police and the NHS, and refers to the Friday before Christmas. On the last Friday before Christmas, the workload increased due to many people going out to drink, the emergency services department will activate emergency plans on this day to cope with the increase in workload. Emergency measures may include the establishment of mobile field hospitals near nightclubs in the city center. The term was later adopted outside of these services to refer to the Friday night and evening before Christmas, and is now considered a mainstream term, not just the jargon of emergency services. In 2010, many US-owned retailers such as Amazon and Asda began to hold American Black Friday promotions; in 2014, more British retailers began to adopt this concept, including Argos, John Lewis and Very.

France

French companies are slowly introducing the customs of Black Friday to the market. Retail giants such as Apple and Amazon offered discounts of up to 85% in 2014. French e-retailers such as FNAC and Auchan advertise online, and Darty also participates in this annual monster sale. Retailers prefer to use the very American term "Black Friday" rather than "Vendredi noir" in their advertisements.

Germany

In Germany, "Black Friday" retailer advertisements refer to "Black Week" and "Black Shopping" in English. Sales last a full week (excluding large Most retail stores are closed on Sundays). During this sales period, the store maintains normal working hours. Although the goods are offered at reduced prices, the price reductions are not much larger than the normal weekly price reductions. Apple was the first company to hold a special Black Friday event for the German market in 2006.
